• Dhul Hijjah 1447AH •
Every year, millions of Muslims travel to the blessed city of Mecca to perform Hajj. It is one of the most profound spiritual journeys a Muslim can experience.
But for most of us, Hajj is not something we are able to perform every year. Life circumstances, finances, family responsibilities, or simply being unable to receive a visa may mean that we remain at home while others gather near the Kaaba.
And that’s okay.
While we may not physically be there, the mercy and blessings of these days reach Muslims all around the world. The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are among the most sacred days of the entire year, leading up to the beautiful celebration of Eid al-Adha.
These are days when our hearts naturally turn toward Allah. So if you can’t go to Hajj this year, bring the spirit of Hajj into your home.
Bringing the Spirit of Hajj Into Your Home
Hajj is a journey of humility, remembrance, sacrifice, and connection with Allah. While the rituals themselves can only be performed in Mecca, the spirit of Hajj can absolutely be lived wherever we are.
Here are a few simple ways to bring that spirit into your home this Dhul Hijjah.
1. Increase Your Dhikr and Dua
These days are a powerful opportunity to reconnect with Allah.
The companions of the Prophet ﷺ would increase their remembrance during these days. Filling our homes with dhikr brings a sense of calm and purpose to our daily routines.
An easy Islamic habit to start is setting aside just 10 minutes each day for sincere dua.
It might be after Fajr, before Maghrib, or right before you sleep.
Use that time to ask Allah for guidance, forgiveness, and blessings for your family. Sometimes the quietest moments of the day become the most meaningful ones.
2. Teach Children the Meaning of Hajj
For families, Dhul Hijjah is a beautiful opportunity to introduce children to the story and significance of Hajj.
Talk about Prophet Ibrahim (AS), the sacrifice he was willing to make, and the deep trust he had in Allah. Explain why Muslims around the world gather in Mecca each year. Small, simple conversations like this plant seeds of love for our faith in young hearts.
You can also make it interactive by incorporating Islamic activities at home such as storytelling, crafts, or affirmation cards that help children connect Islamic values with their everyday lives.
3. Create a Home That Remembers Allah
During the days of Hajj, millions of pilgrims spend their time in worship, reflection, and prayer and we can mirror that spirit in our own homes.
Play Quran, make dhikr together as a family, or spend time reading about the lives of the prophets. Even small moments of remembrance can transform the atmosphere of a home.
4. Encourage Positive Islamic Habits
Dhul Hijjah is the perfect time to nurture small habits that strengthen our connection with Allah.
For children, simple reminders and affirmations can help them build confidence in their faith and feel proud of being Muslim. Reminding them to make dua, be grateful, or trust Allah, can help make Islamic values part of their daily routine.
5. Reflect and Reset Before the New Islamic Year
Dhul Hijjah is the final month of the Islamic calendar, which means it’s also a natural time for reflection.
Take a moment to think about the past year.
What habits helped you grow closer to Allah?
What would you like to improve moving forward?
Just like Hajj represents a spiritual reset for pilgrims, this month can be a reset for all of us.
A Simple Habit for These Blessed Days
If there’s one habit you start this Dhul Hijjah, let it be this:
Take 10 minutes every day for dua.
No distractions.
No phone.
Just you and Allah.
Those ten minutes might become the most powerful part of your day.
Even if we are not standing on the plains of Arafah or walking around the Kaaba, Allah sees the intentions in our hearts.
Sometimes the most meaningful journeys happen quietly, right where we are.
May Allah allow us to experience the blessings of these sacred days, accept our worship, and one day grant us the opportunity to visit His sacred house in Mecca one day. Ameen 🤲
