In Islam, parenting is a spiritual responsibility as much as it is a worldly one. At its heart is sabr (patience) and the trust that through every tantrum, late night, or challenge, Allah sees our effort and will reward us for every moment done with sincerity.
π± The Three Stages of Parenting in Islam
According to a well-known Islamic teaching by our Prophet (pbuh), children should be raised in three key stages:
- 0β7 years: Play with them. This is the age of love, affection and gentle teaching through play. It’s about connection, trust and fun.
- 8β14 years: Teach them. This is the time to instill values, Islamic manners (adab) and responsibility.
- 15β21 years: Befriend them. At this age, they need respect, guidance and trust β not control.
This structure reminds us that parenting is not one-size-fits-all. Each phase requires a different kind of sabr and a deep awareness of our childβs needs and emotional development.
