Muharram: Happy New Year in July!?🌙

muharram istkhara

As the crescent moon ushers in the sacred month of Muharram, we enter a new chapter in the Islamic calendar. A chance to reflect on the past year and set fresh intentions for the year ahead. Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam as it signals a time to slow down, increase in good deeds and begin with sincerity and purpose.

One beautiful way to begin the Muharram and the Islamic year is by turning to Istikhara, a powerful prayer for guidance. Often used when making big decisions, Istikhara is a tool to build trust in Allah’s plan. Whether it’s about work, relationships, parenting or personal growth. You can read our simple guide on how to make Istkhara including both the prayer and the accompanying dua below:

To perform Istikhara according to the Sunni method, begin by praying two units (rak‘ahs) of voluntary prayer. Make the intention of seeking guidance from Allah. After reciting Surah Al Fatiha in your first rak’ah follow it with Surah Al Ikhlas. In your second rak’ah recite Surah Al Kafirun.

After completing the prayer, recite the Istikhara dua. Ask Allah to guide you to what is best for your deen, your life and your future. The dua acknowledges that only Allah has full knowledge and power. It asks Him to make easy what is good and to turn you away from what is not. Once you’ve made the dua, trust in Allah’s wisdom — there’s no need to wait for a dream or a sign. Instead, pay attention to what feels right, what doors open, and where your heart feels at peace. Read the dua below:

🌿 Translation:

“O Allah, I seek Your guidance [in making a choice] by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I do not know. You are the Knower of the unseen.

O Allah, if You know that this matter (—mention it here—) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and for my life in the Hereafter then ordain it for me, make it easy for me and bless it for me.

And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and my life in the Hereafter, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it and ordain for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.”
